Cancer patients missing out

During a seminar hosted by my All Party Group on Science and Technology, Professor Ian Young stressed that Northern Ireland spends less on health research and development than any other region in the UK.

Not only does this impact on potential pharmaceutical investment, but local patients are losing out on the most up to date treatments. Professor Young stated that by the end of 2013, a third of new cancer drugs available to UK patients were not prescribed in Northern Ireland.

I’ve raised these matters with the Health Minister, because I believe that patients in Northern Ireland deserve the best possible treatments available.
