Newton’s Third Law of motion states:
“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”
Any pact that looks likes it is going to succeed will also be met with an equal and opposite reaction.
It does not matter whether there is a formal pact between Sinn Fein and the SDLP, the voters will work it out for themselves.
If the aim is to defeat Sinn Fein – this is exactly the wrong way to go about it.
If the aim is to destroy the SDLP or any other party that enters a pact as the weaker party then the strategy is spot on.
Weaker members of the pact will emerge weaker still.
And so the politics of the past rolls on for another generation.
