A truly engaging and popular figure in national politics, Charles was a Member of Parliament for 32 years and in May 2005 led his party to their best general election result since the 1920s.
Basil McCrea said “Charles Kennedy will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to public service. His wit and charm allowed him to connect with the general public in a unique manner. Charles demonstrated passion, courage, commitment and kindness. He will be sadly missed.”
Charles Kennedy was not without personal problems but ultimately personal failings are what make us human.
Lord Ashdown told the BBC that Mr Kennedy “had his demons, we all have our demons, but on form and when he was on song Charles was the best of all of us”.
The Leadership and Executive of NI21 extend our sympathies to his family and are grateful for his huge contribution to political life.
